The AC receiver drier, also known as a drier-receiver or accumulator, plays an indispensable role in the operation of automotive air conditioning systems. Its primary function is to act as a storage vessel for liquid refrigerant while simultaneously removing any moisture and contaminants from the circulating refrigerant. This task is crucial for several reasons. Moisture in the system can freeze at the expansion valve due to the sudden pressure drop, obstructing refrigerant flow and causing cooling to cease. Moreover, moisture can react with the refrigerant to form acidic compounds, which corrode metallic components from the inside out, including the compressor, condenser, and evaporator. Contaminants, such as particles from hoses, solder, or previous compressor failures, can also cause significant damage by clogging small orifices and abrading surfaces.
