Understanding the Piston Type Compressor: How It Works and Why It Matters The piston type compressor is one of the most widely used positive displacement compressors in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Its operation is based on the reciprocating motion of a piston within a cylinder, which compresses refrigerant vapor to elevated pressures, enabling the transfer of heat from one location to another. In a typical refrigeration cycle, low-pressure refrigerant vapor enters the compressor’s suction chamber. The piston moves downward, creating a vacuum that draws the vapor through the suction valve. As the piston moves upward, it compresses the vapor, raising its temperature and pressure to a level where it can be condensed in the condenser coil. The high-pressure vapor then exits through the discharge valve, continuing its journey through the expansion valve and evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the surrounding environment.
